Nasul știe: 8 boli pe care câinii se pricep să le adulmece PDF Imprimare

Dogs are particularly good at detecting disease with their keen sense of smell

It’s been estimated that dogs smell up to 10,000 times better than us. That’s in part because they have about 220 million scent receptors, whereas humans have a mere 5 million. But dogs also inhale in short breaths up to 300 times a minute, meaning that their olfactory cells are constantly picking up new scents. It’s these factors that make them effective – and adorable – real-time disease detectors.
When we’re sick, we produce compounds that waft around us. In infectious or disease states, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted in breath, blood, sweat and urine, creating a volatilome or ‘aura’ of molecules around the human body. These VOCs often result in changes in body odor, which, studies have found, are detectable by dogs. But what conditions are dogs able to detect?

Here are eight diseases that our furry friends are particularly good at sniffing out.

When tea is fermented, the result is kombucha, a beverage that has been quickly gaining traction as a health drink in recent years

Kombucha, a sour drink made by fermenting sweetened tea, has shown some promise as a health-promoting beverage. Now, its powers may extend to helping those suffering from type 2 diabetes keep their blood glucose levels in check, according to a new small study.
Kombucha has been consumed around the world for centuries as a stimulating health tonic. In modern times, scientific studies have hinted at its ability to act as an inflammation-reducing antioxidant, an antibacterial, and a potential probiotic. The drink has also been studied before for its effects on blood sugar, with one study showing that in healthy people, it was able to hold down spikes in plasma glucose and insulin when consumed with a carbohydrate-rich meal.

Terapia cu ARN vizează celulele canceroase ale măduvei osoase greu accesibile

Early RNA therapy studies suggest the treatment could be used against hard-to-reach bone marrow cancers

RNA therapies are emerging as a promising treatment for cancer, but some types

of the disease don’t respond well to it. Now, scientists at Tel Aviv University have

demonstrated a way to use RNA drugs to treat multiple myeloma, a hard-to-reach

cancer that forms deep in bone tissue.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that affects a patient’s plasma cells. As these important

immune cells become cancerous, they accumulate in the bone marrow, causing pain

and immune issues. While the disease can be managed, it can’t currently be cured,

thanks largely to the difficulty in getting drugs to the tumors inside the patient’s bones.

The death of a loved one following a cancer battle can trigger prolonged grief that can seemingly cause life to come to a standstill. It can also be difficult to treat with traditional medication and therapy, leaving the griever 'stuck' in this stage for a year or more.
Now, in one of the first trials of its kind and the first in Australia since psychedelics were approved for therapeutic use, psilocybin will be used to treat adults in this grief holding pattern.

Luni, 08 Mai 2023 14:00
The AHA emphasizes the importance of looking at an overall dietary pattern rather than “good” or “bad” individual foods.
There are few areas of health with as much conflicting information as diet and nutrition. In an effort to simplify advice, the American Heart Association (AHA) has offered a no-nonsense assessment of 10 popular dietary patterns specifically for how well they can improve cardiometabolic health.
"The number of different, popular dietary patterns has proliferated in recent years, and the amount of misinformation about them on social media has reached critical levels," said AHA’s Christopher D. Gardner, Rehnborg Farquhar Professor of Medicine at Stanford University.
