    The World Health Organization (WHO) is releasing today new data that show a low global rate of taxes being applied to unhealthy products such as alcohol and sugary sweetened beverages (SSBs). The findings highlight that the majority of countries are not using taxes to incentivize healthier behaviours. To help support countries WHO is also releasing a technical manual on alcohol tax policy and administration.

    Globally 2.6 million people die from drinking alcohol every year and over 8 million from an unhealthy diet, implementing tax on alcohol and SSBs will reduce these deaths.

    Half of all countries taxing SSBs are also taxing water, which is not recommended by WHO. Although 108 countries are taxing some sort of sugar-sweetened beverage, globally, on average excise tax, a tax designated for a specified consumer product, represents just 6.6% of the price of soda.

   In patients with type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leaving the body unable to regulate blood sugar levels and leading to a host of health problems.

                                 A new study suggests that type 2 diabetes causes a person's voice to change in a subtle but consistent manner
   

  Currently, if someone wants to see if they have type 2 diabetes, they have to travel to a clinic for blood tests and then wait for results. According to a recent study, however, a 10-second smartphone voice recording may soon deliver on-the-spot results immediately.

   The study was conducted by scientists from international biotech firm Klick Labs, and involved 267 test subjects who had already been diagnosed as being either non-diabetic (192 people) or type 2 diabetic (75 people).

       For the first time, researchers have identified the genetic mechanism underlying the protective role zinc has for type 2 diabetes and the fatty liver disease associated with the condition. The findings advance our understanding of metabolism and open the door to developing a novel diabetes treatment.
      Zinc helps with immune function, cell growth and division, DNA synthesis, and metabolism. Given its importance, our bodies have evolved mechanisms to maintain zinc levels. One such mechanism involves the Solute Carrier Family 39, Member 5 (SLC39A5) gene, which encodes a protein belonging to the family of zinc transporters that transport zinc into cells.
