Sublime Cement says it's ready to start scaling on the "world's cleanest cement," which meets industry performance standards relying on room-temperature electrolyzers in place of fossil-fueled furnaces, using a variety of zero-carbon input materials.
Traditional concrete manufacturing processes result in a ton of CO2 for every ton of cement produced – and since we're talking about somewhere around 4.1 billion tons globally just in 2022 – more than half of that in China alone – cement is a massive contributor to climate change, being responsible for about 8% of global carbon emissions.
This makes it an equally massive opportunity; whoever gets to global scale first on a cost-competitive, totally zero-carbon cement alternative could well be sitting on a giant money-printing machine as decarbonization mandates and carbon taxes start to kick in.
There is no shortage of low-carbon and carbon-capturing concrete alternatives in the works, but MIT spinout Sublime Systems is particularly interesting, since it takes a novel electrochemical approach to cement-making that's "true zero carbon" instead of "net zero carbon" or "carbon-sequestering" – in that it can totally eliminate carbon emissions at both the key points where they typically arise in the process.

High-speed drone racing has just had a shocking "Deep Blue" moment, as an autonomous AI designed by University of Zurich researchers repeatedly forced three world champion-level pilots to eat its dust, showing uncanny precision in dynamic flight.
If you've ever watched a high-level drone race from the FPV perspective, you'll know how much skill, speed, precision and dynamic control it takes. Like watching Formula One from the driver's perspective, or on-board footage from the Isle of Man TT, it's hard to imagine how a human brain can make calculations that quickly and respond to changing situations in real time. It's incredibly impressive.
When Deep Blue stamped silicon's dominance on the world of chess, and AlphaGo established AI's dominance in the game of Go, these were strategic situations, in which a computer's ability to analyze millions of past games and millions of potential moves and strategies gave them the edge.
But now, for the first time, AI has beaten some of the world's best in a real-world, physical sport. An AI system called Swift, developed by researchers from the University of Zurich and Intel, quickly learned a tight, technical 3D racetrack, and proceeded to dominate two human world champions and a three-time Swiss national champion in head-to-head racing, also setting the fastest race time.

Almost three years after the event, neutron scans by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have uncovered the cause of the platform collapse that resulted in the destruction of the 1,000-ft (300-m) Arecibo Observatory radio telescope.
Constructed in 1963, The Arecibo radio telescope was constructed in a natural sinkhole, with a 1.8-million-lb (816,000-kg) steel platform suspended at the focus point 500 ft (150 m) above the mesh dish. For over 50 years it performed cutting-edge astronomical research, beamed one of the first messages into space in an attempt to contact alien civilizations, and was the setting for the climax for the 1995 Bond thriller GoldenEye.

An international crew of four representing four countries is in orbit following a successful launch to the International Space Station at 3:27 a.m. EDT Saturday, Aug. 26, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The agency’s SpaceX Crew-7 mission is the seventh commercial crew rotation mission for NASA.
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the Dragon spacecraft into orbit carrying NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov, for a science expedition aboard the orbital laboratory.

Although the gel of the aloe vera plant is commonly used to treat sunburn, moisturize skin and boost gut health (among other applications), its peels are typically discarded. New research now suggests that those peels could also be used, to make non-toxic insecticide for use by farmers.
The study is being led by Asst. Prof. Debasish Bandyopadhyay, of the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley.
