Is your business using remanufactured toner ?
If so, you’re probably doing so to save money and reduce waste.
But did you know that it might be hurting your business instead of helping it? It’s true. Here are a few things you may not have realized about remanufactured toner.
1. It’s not very reliable and may harm your printer.
Because the critical cartridge components of remanufactured toner are reused, they can very easily be damaged or near the end of their usable life. In other words, they’re more likely to fail. Plus, these reliability problems can cause damage to your printer. Lyra Research found that nearly 1 in 10 LaserJet customers using non-HP cartridges end up with a damaged printer that requires cleaning or repair, and 26 percent experience printer downtime as a result of cartridge problems [1].
2. There are hidden costs.
Yes, remanufactured toner costs less—initially. But with unreliable cartridges comes hidden costs in the form of support calls, reprints, and wasted supplies. These costs can really add up, making using remanufactured toner less economical than it might seem. When you consider the high price of poor reliability and print quality, non-HP toner cartridges can actually cost up to 10 percent more than Original HP toner cartridges [2].
3. It’s not necessarily better for the environment.
Remanufacturing rarely prevents toner from ending up in landfills. According to a 2014 study, nearly 90 percent of the toner cartridges sold by the remanufacturers surveyed will ultimately be thrown away because most remanufacturers fail to collect their own products [3]. If you buy an Original HP LaserJet toner cartridge and recycle it through the HP Planet Partners program, you can be assured that it will never end up in a landfill.
4. Remanufacturers can’t replicate HP technology.
Using remanufactured toner will guarantee that you aren’t getting the quality your printer has the potential for producing. Even if they claim to be similar to Original HP cartridges, remanufactured cartridges can’t replicate HP technology exactly because HP technical specifications are proprietary and unpublished. Plus, most aftermarket toners lack uniformity in particle size, unlike HP toner, which is uniquely formulated to provide excellent print quality and reliability [4].
5. Remanufactured cartridge page yields do not equal those of HP cartridges.
When you use remanufactured cartridges, you may not always get the number of pages you expect since most do not adhere to ISO standards for measuring page yield. If a remanufacturer tells you to turn down your density dial, go ahead—but know that this is the same as printing in draft mode and can prevent you from getting the quality you need. So before you decide to use remanufactured toner cartridges, you may want to reconsider. Do your research and figure out if it really will be as beneficial to your business as you might think.
