An international team of astronomers led by the University of Warwick has found a "forbidden" planet orbiting the "Neptunian Desert" of another star. Located 920 light years from Earth, exoplanet NGTS-4b is 20 percent smaller than Neptune, yet it retains an atmosphere despite being close enough to circle its star once every 1.3 days and having a surface temperature of 1,000° C (1,800° F).

The hunt for exoplanets keeps throwing out surprises and the latest is a planet that simply shouldn't be where it is. The accepted wisdom is that planets the size of Neptune or smaller can have atmospheres when they are far away from their host stars, but are airless, rocky planets if they are close in because, unlike those the size of Jupiter and bigger, they haven't enough gravity or powerful magnetic fields to counteract the heat and solar winds from a star at close range.

Discovered by the Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) telescope array at the European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory in Chile's infamous Atacama Desert, NGTS-4b is a "forbidden" planet in that it is a Neptune-sized planet with a mass 20 times that of the Earth, it is close in to its star, but it still has an atmosphere.

Statement at the end of an IMF Staff Review Mission to Tunisia PDF Imprimare
Miercuri, 10 Aprilie 2019 08:35

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff team led by Björn Rother visited Tunisia from March 27 to April 9 to discuss the authorities’ economic reform program and their policy plans for the Fifth Review supported by the IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement. At the end of the visit, Mr. Rother made the following statement:

“We had constructive discussions with the authorities on their economic reform policies needed to complete the Fifth Review under the EFF arrangement. The Tunisian authorities are moving decisively on a policy agenda to stabilize and reform the economy, taking into account the strained socio-political situation in the run-up to Parliamentary and Presidential elections later this year. The Tunisian authorities and IMF staff have reached mutual understandings on most issues and agree that the authorities need some more time to fully flesh out their policy proposals in a few areas. Discussions will continue in Washington, DC, over the coming days.

A historic mission to the Moon is approaching its crescendo, with the Israeli-built Beresheet lander today entering orbit around our biggest satellite and preparing to close in on its surface. If successful, it will become the first privately built spacecraft to touch down on the Moon, and would make Israel just the fourth nation to do so after the US, the Soviet Union and China.

Beresheet, which is Hebrew for "In the Beginning," launched from Cape Canaveral in February atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, where it became the first private mission to the Moon to reach lift-off. Originally built for the Google Lunar XPrize competition (which ended with no winner), the spacecraft is actually the lightest ever sent to the Moon with a mass of just 1,322 lb (600 kg).
