With US sanctions still in place and EU legislative obstacles looming, however, the Russian project is not out of the wood just yet. [Gas in Transition, Volume 1, Issue 3]

Russia's embattled Nord Stream 2 is now tantalisingly close to completion, with the project's operator confirming to NGW on June 4 that the pipelaying work on its first string is now complete. "The laid pipeline sections need to be connected and thereafter the required pre-commissioning activities will be carried out," the Gazprom-owned Nord Stream 2 operating company said in a statement. "Pipelay works on the other line are continuing." The update comes weeks after the Biden administration said it would not go ahead with further sanctions against Nord Stream 2, in the interest of maintaining good ties with Germany’s government, which remains a staunch supporter of the project. “Our opposition to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is unwavering,” US secretary of state Anthony Blinken said on May 19. &ldqu...

Nokia builds 5G standalone network extension for Estonian Cyber Range PDF Imprimare
Miercuri, 14 Iulie 2021 11:26

                          Nokia - Business Enviroment Analysis

Nokia has today announced its private wireless Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) 5G standalone solution has been selected by the Estonian company Thinnect OÜ to enhance the Estonian Cyber Range’s Industry 4.0 capabilities. This is part of the cyber defence project initiated by the Estonian Ministry of Defence on threats related to emerging technologies.

With the evolution to Industry 4.0, industrial sectors are increasingly relying on digital systems to run their operations, exposing them to new cyber-attacks. To better protect networks and data, as well as national critical infrastructure, military agencies around the globe are investing in cybersecurity training.

Oamenii de știință creează o formă cristalină solidă de electroni în laborator PDF Imprimare

An artist's impression of the structure of a Wigner crystal made of electrons (red) inside a semiconductor material (blue and gray)

Researchers at ETH Zurich have created a crystal made entirely of electrons. The structures have been theorized for decades, but this marks the first time they’ve been experimentally confirmed in the lab.

Normally, electrons behave more or less like a liquid, flowing freely through a material. But in 1934, theoretical physicist Eugene Wigner predicted that a group of electrons could crystallize into a solid form under specific conditions, forming a phase now known as a Wigner crystal.

s: their electrostatic repulsion and their motional energy. The latter is the more powerful effect, causing electrons to bounce around at random, but if that could be reduced enough, Wigner proposed, then the repulsion could take over, locking the electrons into a uniform lattice.

But that proved trickier than it may sound. The density of electrons needs to be lowered beyond a certain point, they need to be confined in a “trap”, and they need to be cooled almost to absolute zero, to reduce outside influence on their movement.

With its rows of small, ducted fans, the Lilium eVTOL aircraft may be at a disadvantage in a hover, but the company says the design offers some serious advatnages over the open-rotor competition
With its rows of small, ducted fans, the Lilium eVTOL aircraft may be at a disadvantage in a hover, but the company says the design offers some serious advatnages over the open-rotor competition

Small fans, all things considered, deliver thrust less efficiently than big ones. Lilium might have the best-looking aircraft in the eVTOL game, but it uses 36 tiny fans where competitors use six to eight larger ones, and that's got the odd chin wagging: is Lilium shooting itself in the foot, guaranteeing its aircraft shorter range figures than open-rotor competitors carrying the same amount of battery?

Perhaps not. The company has decided to address these concerns head-on and revealed plenty about Lilium's thinking in the process. We caught up for a Zoom chat with Lilium co-founder and VP of Product Patrick Nathen, and the company's new CTO, Alistair McIntosh, fresh out of his last position as Chief Engineer and Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Germany, to talk about the pros and cons of the small-fan approach.

Nokia and Allo to deploy gigabit fiber network in Malaysia PDF Imprimare
Marţi, 25 Mai 2021 07:25

Nokia today announced that it has been chosen by Allo, an Information and Communications Technology service provider in Malaysia, to deploy a gigabit fiber network in the states of Melaka, Johor, Negeri Sembilan and East Coast of Malaysia.

The deployment, which includes Nokia’s Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) solution and Access Management System, will be completed by end of Q2 2021 covering nearly 150,000 homepasses. When completed, the end-users will be able to enjoy a high-speed broadband network and applications that require high capacity. The future-ready fiber network will enable Allo to increase its revenue as it will be able to support new use cases like smart cities, smart poles, edge automation, 5G backhaul, and enterprise services.
